Our Story
Farm Girl Fitness was established in June 2020.
How it all began…
Owner, Jessie Thomas, lost her job as an instructor and coach after 13 years in the fitness industry in March 2020 due to the Covid-19 pandemic. She not only needed to find work but saw a need in her community to keep people moving, connected and safe. So in June 2020 she converted her family’s 88 acre farm into a playground for outdoor fitness. Because exercise equipment and weights were so scarce at the time, Jessie got creative by using things like hay bales, logs, tires and other things that were common to the farm.
As time passed and winter approached, the need to expand and offer classes indoors became very apparent.
So in September of 2020 construction began on retrofitting the 16 stall horse barn that resides on the property. The family farm had originally been used as a horse breeding and training facility since 2008. Over time the family business no longer required the animals to be on site leaving the barn empty. Thus when the time came to look at expanding to indoor classes the barn was a perfect fit both size and location wise.
Construction involved hours and hours of digging up old floors, pouring concrete, removing the stall dividers, installing heating and cooling systems, and extensive cleaning of the original wood walls. After much hard work, the 800 square foot Studio, (now the boxing and personal training studio), opened November 2020.

INDOOR SPACE
After gyms and studios began to reopen in late 2021 the need for a second larger indoor studio space was very apparent. So in late October 2021 construction began on Studio 2, a 1500 square foot studio with room for 2 more bathrooms, coat room, coffee bar and more. This space would allow for even more members, equipment, turf, and the main feature of the barn doors that can be open from spring-fall. This studio is a beautiful, unique, bright open space that allows for people to enjoy the feeling of the farm year round.
In January 2021 another gym shutdown happened in Ontario forcing the studio to close. This provided an opportunity for the farm to utilize yet another building on the property, the Round Pen, to help people keep active outdoors even during the winter.
THE ROUND PEN
The Round Pen is a large, octagon shaped open air building that used to be used for horse exercise.
The covered space was perfect for keeping people out of the harsh winter wind, snow and sleet and yet still in the fresh air.
This space was used for many months during the shutdowns of 2021 and 2022. The coldest workout was -15 celsius.
